How Do I Recognize Anxiety?

In today’s world, it is quite normal to have some stress or anxiety on a daily basis. Our attention is often split in a million directions at the same time.  It is common to feel that if you are not juggling multiple tasks then something is wrong. Never mind the digital age we live in and all the pull for your attention from social media and smart devices.

Anxiety, though normal in many instances, may escalate to the point where it starts to impede your functioning. Too much anxiety may disrupt your focus, sleep, present as physical symptoms and impact your ability to relate to others. You may also find it difficult to move past your worried thoughts and feel relaxed. Anxiety impacts our lives in the following domains:

Thoughts and Feelings

  • Rumination: feeling like your mind can’t stop thinking about something but it doesn’t lead to you finding a solution
  • You can’t turn your mind off at night to sleep
  • Always thinking about what will go wrong
  • Excessive concerns about safety and control
  • Feeling weak and unable to cope
  • Feeling powerless to get out of the anxiety loop

Changes in the Body

  • Tightness or tension in your body (chest, neck, forehead, back, jaw)
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • Upset stomach (butterfly sensations, nausea)
  • Feeling restless or agitated in your body

Actions in the World

  • Engaging in avoidance as a means to reduce your anxiety
  • Noticing that your life has become smaller as a result of your anxiety

  • Fidgety or restless

The Impact of Anxiety

In the U.S. alone, approximately 40 million, or 18.1% of the population struggles with anxiety as reported by the World Health Organization. In the U.S., anxiety is the 3rd leading cause of health issues and loss of functioning. People struggling with anxiety are 3 to 5 times more likely to visit a doctor compared to people without anxiety. Astonishingly, only 36.9% of those with anxiety seek treatment, leaving most to suffer silently and without support. This does not have to be you!

The truth is, we all have things in our lives that contribute to feeling fearful and anxious. This is a normal part of being human.  In small doses, anxiety can be motivating and keep us on our toes. However, problems develop when your anxiety causes you to avoid experiences rather than engage in life’s challenges. Anxiety often develops from worrying about the future and wanting to avoid or control specific outcomes. When you become preoccupied with anxiety, your life feels smaller and less rewarding as a result.

We will use a wide variety of treatment methods to treat your anxiety, including Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Meditation, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). We may also recommend lifestyle and health changes that may reduce your experience of anxiety. 

What will remain constant is our commitment to your care. We will collaborate with you to develop the skills needed to reduce and relate to anxiety in healthier ways.
