Claudio Barrientos
LCSW-A
Welcome to my page! I’m Claudio Barrientos, LCSW-A., a bilingual therapist, fluent in both English and Spanish. I work with adolescents and adults. I have expertise in treating stress, anxiety, depression, trauma and OCD. I also treat grief, acculturation, gender identity, chronic pain, relationship and career issues. My path as a therapist has led to work with diverse groups and clinical settings. This includes migrant children that were under the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.
My journey in the helping profession began over a decade ago. At that time, I left the Los Angeles film industry to study mindfulness meditation in New Mexico. Meditation has become a personal practice that has fostered growth and openness. I now incorporate it into my clinical work as well when appropriate. Mindfulness is also a central element in several of the approaches I use. These include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
I work from a culturally sensitive lens, putting you and your unique background at the center. I create a safe, welcoming, and nurturing space for our sessions. We will embark on a collaborative journey of personal growth and exploration. I ask questions and foster dialogue. I also give you practical exercises to use between sessions. I understand that this process can feel daunting. But rest assured, we’ll proceed gently. We’ll go at a pace that aligns with your comfort and trust.
Education is a lifelong pursuit for me. I graduated from the University of San Francisco with a degree in Philosophy & Theology. I got my master’s in clinical social work from the University of Texas San Antonio. I currently have a scholarship to attend Brown University’s Mindfulness Teacher-Training program. I’m training to become certified as a teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. When I complete my training I will bring MBSR to minority populations who may not have access to this wonderful tool.
I was born Chile, raised in Spain, and settled in Connecticut at age ten. I love to travel. I’m open and curious about people, cultures, food, religion, science, philosophy, and psychology.
If you’d like, feel free to schedule a 15-minute call or Zoom chat. I’d love to connect, chat, and get to know each other better.
“Mindfulness in therapy is the art of waking to the Present. This is done with an attitude of kindness, curiosity, and acceptance. It’s not about rehashing the past or rehearsing for an unknown future. It’s about embracing the here and now. This is the only place where healing begins and transformation unfolds”. -Claudio Barrientos, LCSW-A
